For an unusually beautiful piece of meadowland on the Swedish west coast, Britain's most legendary golf architecture firm - Hawtree Limited, designed the now highly acclaimed Vallda course. In his dedication to creating a very special course, drawn entirely from the classic Scottish golfing tradition, Martin Hawtree did not make it easy for engineers and designers. But the result was stunning.
Countless tons of sand were laid over the hard clay base and it took 40 km (approx. 25 miles) of drainage and top-dressing, including the playing surfaces, before the Scottish inland links could be completed in 2009. As probably the most well-drained course in Sweden, the intended hard playing surface can be kept dry, allowing the ball to bounce and roll even in the most demanding weather conditions.
The golf course at Vallda Golf & Country Club is a distinctive Scottish inland links and has in a relatively short time become one of the country's most popular courses. Martin Hawtree was inspired by the legendary golf courses of the 1920s when he designed the perfect course for the beautiful meadowland. The greens in particular are a hallmark of the course designer Martin Hawtree, and the Vallda course's dry, hard playing surfaces, distinctive bunkers, undulating green areas and strategic holes surrounded by swaying high ruff provide a good challenge whatever your handicap.
A basic requirement for the playing experience at Vallda is the Red Fescue grass species. We handpick other grasses that want to come up, to reward our gem red fescue which is worthy of all our extra care. By being stingy with water and fertiliser, red fescue can compete with other grasses. That means the runway is often dry and yellow - and that's how we want our Scottish inland links. The legendary English agronomist George R Shiels set out a strategy from the outset to create a very high quality fairway on the Vallda course over time. This is done mainly by dressing up a vegetation profile with sand, which is a laborious but rewarding way to maintain and develop a course of the very highest quality. It requires knowledge, time and effort but we have always believed that hard work pays off. Today we are top ten in Sweden.
With one of Sweden's best and most fun courses, framed by an engaging lush and towering deciduous forest, with a lauded restaurant and an all-encompassing and special atmosphere, you can look forward to a memorable experience at Vallda Golf & Country Club. We think you'll want to visit again, many times. A warm welcome to Vallda G&CC!
