World-class golf at heart of great overall experience

The history of Vallda Golf & Country Club begins in the mid-1990s, when a group of close friends, Peter Teiffel, August Lindeblad, Anders Rabbe and Reine Rosén, started to dream about creating a British heathland golf course. After a long search, they eventually found 86 hectares of meadowland, surrounded by oak forest, in Valldadalen, outside Kungsbacka. This was the perfect site on which to create a classic Scottish heathland golf course.

Once planning permission had been granted, the golf architect Martin Hawtree was commissioned to design the course. When sketching the layout, he drew inspiration from the legendary English golf courses of the 1920s, and the first nine holes were opened in May 2009. Just two months later, all 18 holes were completed. Featuring distinctive bunkers, undulating greens and holes strategically surrounded by tall rough, the course provides a challenge to all players, regardless of handicap. And a series of alternative routes makes a round here varied and unpredictable.

When it comes to a quick heathland course, grass is a key factor. Red fescue has been sown across the entire course, which, combined with over 40 kilometres of drainage and sand, creates a dry, hard playing surface where the ball rolls and bounces. Thanks to its modern construction, sustainable maintenance and, not least, plenty of passion, the course always has excellent areas of play. Vallda Golf & Country Club is currently ranked among the top ten courses in the country, and has been referred to as Sweden’s most enjoyable course to play on. At our ultra-modern training centre you can practise like a pro, whatever your age or handicap, with our resident Head Pro Emil Rosberg. Emil also looks after kids and juniors who dream about breaking par at Martin Hawtree’s classic links course.

Whether you’ve played 18 holes or been winding down in our outdoor enclosure, you’ll soon get hungry. And the wonderful aromas from the kitchen run by Ingemar and Ingrid Lyxell certainly whet the appetite. Many will recognise Ingemar from 28+, the Michelin-star restaurant in Gothenburg. And you definitely won’t be disappointed, whether you’re eating lunch, enjoying a snack or tucking into our famous Christmas smorgasbord. With one of the country’s best golf courses, a first-rate restaurant, padel and tennis courts, a training centre and plans for additional conference facilities and more room for our members, Vallda Golf & Country Club is gradually evolving into a great experience for the whole family.

An experience & a place to meet

A classic heathland course which offers a challenge to amateurs and professionals alike

The golf course was created with inspiration from the traditional Scottish heathland courses, with hard ground. It was designed by Martin Hawtree, who represents Hawtree Limited, the English family business which has been designing golf courses since 1912. Bearing in mind our common vision when it comes to golf architecture, traditional use of terrain and challenging greens every time your play, it was a simple choice. The greens in particular are a Hawtree trademark. His portfolio features hundreds of courses, including Royal Birkdale, in England, Portmarnock and Lahinch, in Ireland, and Royal Melbourne, in Australia.

A sustainable course

Red fescue grass underpins the course terrain. By watering and fertilising sparingly, the fescue is able to compete with other grass species, which means the course is often dry and yellow. The fairways were initially sown with a heavy clay, which doesn’t usually produce great results. However, working alongside the legendary English agronomist George Shiels, we came up with a strategy to create high quality fairways over time, by dressing the plant profile with sand. This is a sustainable way to maintain and develop a course of the highest calibre. It requires expertise and, not least, considerable time and energy, but it’s all done with our common environment in mind.
